Discover the New Brunswick Heat Pump Rebate and Save Big!

The New Brunswick Heat Pump Rebate is a combination of federal and provincial incentives designed to help homeowners transition to energy-efficient heat pumps.

For example, low-to-median-income households can receive up to $10,000 through the federal Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program. Meanwhile, NB Power offers rebates of up to $2,000 through its Total Home Energy Savings Program.Enhanced rebates are also available for households earning less than $70,000 annually, which include free mini-split heat pumps and insulation upgrades. Negotiations are underway to increase federal rebates to $15,000 in New Brunswick, similar to other Atlantic provinces.

What are the Available Rebate Programs in New Brunswick?

Before starting the details of each rebate program, it's important to note that combining federal and provincial rebates can maximize your savings. Take a look below for the key programs you can subscribe to:

Federal Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program

You can get up to $10,000, with potential increases to $15,000 in co-delivery provinces like Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia. The program also offers supplementary provincial grants and a $250 bonus payment in these provinces.

Eligibility Criteria:

Designed for low-to-median-income households. A household of four must have an after-tax income of $121,900 or less. Plus, a household of two must have an after-tax income of $75,325 or less.

Additional:

Applicants must own their homes and use oil as the primary heating source. Proof of purchasing at least 1,000 liters of heating oil in the last 12 months is required. Homes must be connected to an integrated electricity grid and be at least six months old.

NB Power Total Home Energy Savings Program

This program offers financial incentives to New Brunswick homeowners to upgrade to energy-efficient heating systems, including various types of heat pumps.

Rebate Amounts:

The rebate amounts include $1,500 for air-source heat pumps, $2,000 for ground-source heat pumps, $400 for mini-split heat pumps, and $350 per indoor head for multi-zone heat pumps.

These rebates aim to reduce the upfront costs of energy-efficient upgrades while encouraging sustainable energy use.

Eligibility Criteria:

To qualify, applicants must have a gross household income of $125,000 or less and complete a pre-installation energy audit costing $99. The program also requires homes to undergo an initial energy evaluation by a Certified Energy Advisor, who provides a detailed report with prioritized recommendations for upgrades.

Additionally, homes must meet structural criteria, such as being habitable, having all interior and exterior finishes in place, and possessing a functioning automated heating system.

Participants have up to nine months from the initial evaluation to complete their upgrades and schedule a final inspection. The program also allows homeowners to combine these rebates with other provincial or federal programs to maximize financial benefits.

Enhanced Energy Savings Program

The Enhanced Energy Savings Program provides significant support for low-income households by offering free mini-split heat pumps and insulation upgrades to improve energy efficiency. These upgrades aim to reduce heating and cooling costs while enhancing home comfort, particularly for households that may struggle with high energy expenses.

Rebate Amount:

Free mini-split heat pumps and insulation upgrades are provided at no cost to eligible participants. Additional measures, such as air sealing or ventilation improvements, may also be included based on the home's specific needs.

Eligibility Criteria:

Households earning less than $70,000 annually qualify for the program. Applicants may need to provide proof of income and undergo a home energy assessment to determine eligibility and prioritize upgrades.

Additional:

The program targets homes needing significant energy efficiency improvements, focusing on those with outdated heating systems or poor insulation. Participants can expect long-term savings on energy bills and improved home comfort.

Check Your Eligibility

Confirm your household income meets the program requirements and make sure that your current heating system qualifies (e.g., oil-to-heat pump conversion). Review any additional criteria, such as proof of fuel usage or home ownership beforehand.

Schedule an Energy Audit

An energy audit is mandatory for NB Power programs. It helps assess a home’s energy efficiency and provides recommendations for eligible upgrades.

Select an Approved Heat Pump System

Choose a model that meets rebate criteria (e.g., air-source or ground-source) and verify that the system is listed as eligible under the specific program guidelines.

Hire a Certified Contractor

Work with licensed HVAC professionals who meet program standards. Make sure that the contractor is familiar with rebate requirements to avoid delays in approval.

Submit Your Application

Apply online or through designated portals for each program. Double-check that all required documents, such as income verification and audit reports, are included.

Complete Installation

Ensure proper installation by approved contractors who follow program specifications and keep all receipts and documentation for submission.

Claim Your Rebate

Submit proof of installation, invoices, and other required documents. Then, follow up with the program administrators if processing takes longer than expected.

Getting the Most from Your Savings

To fully take advantage of these programs, it’s important to understand the requirements, follow the steps carefully, and make sure that you meet all eligibility criteria. By staying organized and informed, you can secure the highest rebate possible. Here are a few tips you can follow to make the most of your situation:

  • Combine federal and provincial rebates where applicable. This can significantly reduce upfront costs and maximize the financial benefits of your energy-efficient upgrades.
  • Opt for high-efficiency models that qualify for larger incentives, as these models often provide greater long-term energy savings, further reducing your utility bills over time.
  • Take advantage of free upgrades (e.g., insulation) under the Enhanced Energy Savings Program if eligible. These upgrades improve energy efficiency, enhance overall home comfort, and reduce heating and cooling demands.
  • Use tools like BC Hydro’s cost calculator to estimate long-term savings. Tools like these help you evaluate potential reductions in energy costs and calculate payback periods for your investment.
  • Explore additional financing options like zero-interest loans or on-bill financing. Such programs can help cover upfront costs and allow you to repay through manageable monthly installments while benefiting from immediate energy savings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I combine multiple rebate programs?

Yes! Many homeowners can combine federal and provincial rebates to maximize their savings when installing a heat pump. This can significantly reduce upfront costs and make the switch more affordable.

What happens if I don’t complete my project within six months?

You may lose eligibility for certain rebates if deadlines aren’t met, as many programs require completion within a specific timeframe. Extensions may sometimes be granted, but it’s best to confirm with the program provider.

Are there rebates available for upgrading existing heat pumps?

Most rebate programs focus on new installations or conversions from fossil fuel systems. However, some provincial incentives may offer partial rebates for upgrading older, inefficient heat pumps.

Do I need additional permits for installation?

Some municipalities require permits for heat pump installations. Check local regulations to ensure compliance with zoning and noise standards, as failing to do so could delay your project or result in fines.

Will switching to a heat pump increase my home’s resale value?

Yes! Installing a heat pump can enhance your home's resale value by improving energy efficiency, lowering utility costs, and appealing to eco-conscious buyers. It also makes your property more attractive in regions with cold climates like New Brunswick.
